Solo and Together

You can use both, depending on the day.

On your own

Turn the card over when you're ready. On the back you rate the question from 1 to 5 and write a note, from one sentence to a whole page. Notes go to your Journal.

  • Rating is optional
  • Not now skips a card, with no limit
  • Save for later keeps it for another day

With someone

Create a profile for a pair or a group. The person holding the phone reveals the question and reads it aloud, and the other person answers. Then the phone moves on. Answers are spoken and never saved.

  • In a pair: one asks, the other answers, then you swap
  • In a group: read, answer and pass the phone to the person next to you
  • Each profile has its own colour and card count

The Journal

Every Solo note goes to the Journal with its question and the date. The Journal opens with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode, every time. On iPad, the list and the chosen note sit side by side.

  • Edit and delete notes
  • A separate list for cards saved for later
  • Search and filter by month
  • Export to TXT, DOCX or PDF

Who believed in me before I did, and what did they see?

My grandmother, I think. When I was eleven I spent a whole summer drawing the view from her kitchen window, the same pear tree over and over, and she pinned every single drawing to the fridge. Even the bad ones. Especially the bad ones.

I used to think she was just being kind. Writing this, I'm not so sure. I think she saw that I could sit with one thing for a long time without getting bored, and that it mattered to me to get it right. I still do that, at work, with people. I just never connected it to her until now.

I should tell my sister about this. She remembers the fridge.

What disappeared from me when I learned to manage without help?

Asking. I've actually forgotten how to do it. Last week at the shop I couldn't reach the top shelf and I stood there for about a minute rather than ask the man next to me.

When Mum got ill I was fourteen, and after that everything was on me. I was proud of that. I still am, a bit.

But something else went too. The girl who could just cry and someone would come and hold her. I don't know if you can get her back. Maybe I'll start with the top shelf.

Some evenings it's one line. Some evenings it's this.

Day to day

  1. Depth. From light questions to very personal ones. You set the range in Settings.

  2. Skipping. Not now always works, with no limit.

  3. No points or levels. The Home screen only shows simple numbers, like how many cards you turned this month.

  4. Today's card. Plus a widget and a reminder. Both are optional, and the reminder is off by default.

Privacy

  • No account

No sign-in and no profile on our side.

  • No ads or analytics

The app doesn't tell us which questions you pick or what you write. The numbers on the Home screen are counted on your device, just for you.

  • Together

You answer out loud. The app doesn't record or save it. It only keeps the profiles and the card count.

  • A lock on the Journal

Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode, every time. It's an access lock, not separate encryption of each note.

  • iCloud

Sync is on by default. Your notes then also go to your private iCloud, which we can't see. You can turn it off in Settings.

What would my future self thank me for doing today?

There is no waiting list or newsletter.

Questions and answers

Is ipse. a form of therapy?

No. It's a deck of questions for reflection and conversation. It doesn't diagnose anything and it doesn't replace a therapist, a doctor or anyone you'd go to for help.

Do I need an account?

No. There's nothing to sign up for. You open the app and draw a card.

What's free, and what do I pay for?

60 cards are free: 30 for Solo and 30 for Together. The Journal, notes, export, profiles and settings are free too. A single purchase unlocks the full library of 2,200 questions. There is no subscription.

Where are my notes kept?

On your iPhone or iPad, and in your own private iCloud if sync is on (it is by default). We never receive them. Together answers are not saved at all.

I'm getting a new phone or adding an iPad. Will my Journal be on both?

Yes, as long as iCloud sync is on and both devices use the same Apple ID. Notes are then merged between iPhone and iPad. If you turned sync off, your notes stay only on the old phone, so export them first.

How do I restore my purchase?

Use Restore purchases in the app. It uses your Apple ID, so there's nothing to remember on our side.

Something doesn't work. What should I send?

What you did, what you expected, and the app version, which you'll find at the bottom of Settings. Please don't paste your notes. We don't need them to fix anything.
